Self Study 1

This weeks self study involved me moddeling two objects in Blender.

My first of two objects i was tasked with was to create a simple barrel following the tutorial below:

I had never touched Blender before this project however have had some experience with 3DSMax. So i understood a lot of what tools did just not where everything was and all the shortcuts.

I present the barrel:

The tutorial i followed was very informative for finding everything related with blender, however i also found the tutorial hard to follow as since it was being taught in Blender 2.8, there have been significant changes to blender which made things hard to find or sometimes just didn't work. Overall i improvised towards the end and managed to get a good enough looking barrel for my project. Not a bad first time.

My second task for this self study was to create a tourist location you might find in Tasmania. And of course it couldnt just be the Eastlands trash bins (Unfortunetly). I wanted to meet half way for a design that was partially unique but wasnt too challegning at the same time. I ended up at the famous arctic tourist attraction Mawsons Hut! Below is the image of the actual replica hut mueseum.

I used a old trick i learned when i used 3dsMax called topology or reference modeling (or at least i call it that). This is when you have at least two images on a certain axis and align each side of the model to shape it to look like the reference. I had to resaerch a bit on how to implement this but once i had it going it went really well.

Here is my attempt at recreating Mawsons Hut Replica Mueseum:

This took me a little longer than i thought, however i was quite proud of the outcome, especlially the text on the side. I used textures found at https://freepbr.com/ to texture it, however in making this i believe to have made quite a few 3 sided poly's which as i understand can stuff up the textures quite a bit when just applying them.

Overall i was happy with the results considering it was my first time using blender, if i had more time i would have loved to fix the texture issues on the hut but i couldnt find an easy fix other than restarting entirely. Lesson learned that 3 sided polys are terrible when modeling
